Kuta Papua New Guinea: Specialty Coffee for Beautiful Souls

At Lost Coffee, every bag of coffee tells a story, and Kuta Papua New Guinea is a wild one. It’s a tale rooted in the volcanic soil, mountain mists, and the unstoppable spirit of smallholder farmers in the Upper Waghi Valley. With its tropical flavors and tea-like body, this coffee is for the explorers, the dreamers, and anyone who craves a unique coffee.

Rooted in Highlands, Grown with Love and Care

From the emerald valleys and rich volcanic soil of the Upper Waghi, this coffee thrives in a producer’s paradise. With 1,800 to 2,000 mm of rain annually and a perfectly timed dry season, this region brings out the best in every coffee tree.

Great coffee isn’t just about the land—it’s about the people. Farmers from villages like Ambra, Kelewa, and Wurup pour their passion into each coffee tree. These smallholder producers carry their harvests to the Kuta Kofi Mill, where precise sorting and meticulous drying ensures that every bean radiates with the spirit of its origin.

The Kuta Process: Tradition Meets Precision

At Lost Coffee, we know that a great cup starts long before roasting. In the Upper Waghi Valley, every cherry begins its journey infused with nutrients from the volcanic terroir and nourished by the perfect, tropical climate. From there, the process is nothing short of artful:

  • Hand-Sorting: Only the ripest cherries are chosen, ensuring every bean is chosen for its ideal maturation.
  • De-Pulping: The cherry pulp is carefully removed to avoid damaging the seeds.
  • 36-Hour Fermentation: This critical step unlocks complex, layered flavor and acidity that will enrich your cup.
  • Triple Washing: A meticulous process ensuring absolute clarity from the coffee..
  • Sun-Drying: For 5 to 10 days, the coffee basks under the sun, developing its crispness.
  • Conditioning: The coffee rests for 2 to 3 weeks, letting it settle before hulling.

Every step, from farm to mill, is a labor of love and intention. The result? A coffee that brings together a community and strives for excellence.

Tasting Notes: A Flavorful Adventure

Drinking Kuta Papua New Guinea is like taking a sip of your favorite black tea mixed with undertones of tropical fruit. We use this for our cold brew at all 5 of our locations, and we think its tea-like body and subtle fruitier notes shine when poured over ice. Mango and pineapple mingle with the elegance of black tea, layered with rich chocolate and a subtle cranberry tartness to round out the experience.
